Tonkatsu Sauce (Japanese-Style for Korean Tonkatsu, 돈가스 소스)
My notes for this recipe
Tonkatsu sauce is a sweet and savory Japanese-style sauce served with tonkatsu, chicken katsu, and other fried dishes.
In Korea, bottled tonkatsu sauce is widely used at home, but it is also easy to make a simple version with everyday ingredients. Worcestershire sauce gives the sauce its characteristic savory and tangy flavor, while ketchup and sugar add sweetness and body.
If you do not have Worcestershire sauce, you can still make a basic katsu-style sauce with ketchup, soy sauce, sugar, and a small amount of vinegar or another acidic ingredient. Adjust the balance until the sauce tastes sweet, savory, and slightly tangy.
Instructions
Combine the ingredients:
In a pan, add all ingredients except the cornstarch slurry. Stir well while bringing the mixture to a boil.
Thicken the sauce:
Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat and slowly add the cornstarch slurry while stirring continuously. Stir until the sauce thickens.
That's it—your delicious tonkatsu sauce is ready! Pour it generously over your fried tonkatsu to enjoy an authentic taste. 😊
